I watched this movie the first time around having no expectations since I didn't know it was based on a book, and the only word that came to mind was: meh. On its own, it's a mildly, albeit cliché, entertaining teen romance. Nothing dazzling, but I've seen worse. Then I discovered it was based on a FanFic series, and delved into a 3 day reading frenzy to consume the equally cringey "books" that merged the disturbing, titillating themes of 50 Shades with the likeness of One Direction members and the plot line of Cruel Intentions all into one.
Although the books weren't exceptionally well written either, I'm invested now and I do think the movie missed the mark to properly tell this story. At its core, it's a tale of the toxic, passionate, dysfunctional attraction that brings two people together despite all the glaring, evident reasons for why they shouldn't be. I understand that the screenplay adaptation gleamed over their abusive relationship because it's dangerous to romanticize or promote those types of themes to their target teen/young adult audience; however, it's a shame that artistic expression has gone out the window in fear of condoning the disagreeable behaviors modeled by fictitious characters. (And if HBO can do it with critically acclaimed 'Euphoria' why couldn't this film have stuck to its darker source material? I digress.) Portraying them in any other way in an effort to exemplify a healthy relationship for viewers may be the morally responsible thing, but in doing so you've lost the entire hot and cold chemistry between the main characters that drives their attraction to one another. Their whole dynamic is rooted in the abusive tendencies endured (and developed) in their respective childhoods, and it's a huge disservice to both the story and the future of this film series to just wash over how they've carried those learned behaviors into their own adulthood. Take that away and you're left with just another played out 'good-girl-falls-for-handsome-bad-boy' broken record. This may have worked as a stand-alone movie, but since a sequel has already been announced, I'm left to wonder where the character growth or development could possibly be illustrated in subsequent films since Hardin's violence and anger was so toned down from the start. They didn't give this first film legs to carry an entire franchise.
Moreover, it's obvious that the movie struggles to gain sexual momentum. I know many book fans were disappointed that it wasn't "steamy" enough due to the PG-13 rating, and I would mostly agree, but there's no feasible way to bring ALL of the kink from the book to the screen. That being said, I never once even saw a tongue slip in any of their kisses, and all of the music montages and cutaway scenes just made it like a KidzBop edition of 50 shades. I didn't feel any of the burning intensity between the leads, but rather than chalk it up to miscasting or lack of on-screen chemistry, or even blame it on the PG-13 rating, I think this is a case of not enough substance or dialogue to build up the anticipation of those sensual moments. There's no tension, so the release of those "intimate" scenes just falls flat. They strayed too far from Hardin's crudeness that made it foreign and exciting for Tessa, making him lose his edge that drew her to him in the first place. The hunger just isn't there. Nicholas Sparks' movies manage to be more scandalous than this. (Anyone recall Zac Efron's shower sex scene in The Lucky One? Or the infamous rain/love scene in The Notebook? Both PG-13. For a story that centers on Tessa's sexual awakening, I'm utterly confused at the decision to turn a raunchy erotica into a bubblegum tween romance movie that just barely hints at the acts of sex with close range camera angles so nothing is ever actually seen, but rather implied.
All this to say: I didn't hate it on the second viewing after having read the series, despite its flawed translation to film... but I'm inclined to think it has more to do with my increasing fondness for a brooding, tattooed Hero Fiennes-Tiffin than anything else.

The movie did not follow the book at all. The book was set in Washington not Georgia, Tristan was a male not a female, Jace did not come in till the second or third book, Noah was not at all what I imagined, the whole part of the bet was not to make her fall in love it was to take her virginity. The books weren't all that great because of the back and forth but this movie made the book 10x better. Tessa wasn't going to school for Econ she was going for publishing. Overall this movie was horrible. If they do decide to continue the series hopefully they do a better job following the book. Just like 50 shades, you have to make it rated R to get the full effect of the books. I feel like the movie could of been better without the deleted scenes.
